Start an new tradition with afternoon tea at The Chateau.

Tea sandwiches, fresh baked scones, pastries and your choice of tea highlight The Chateau on the Lake’s afternoon tea. Renew an old English custom or start a new Missouri Ozarks tradition with an indulgent midday break.

We began our afternoon gathering by selecting from a variety of teas. One of my guests chose a traditional English tea and the other, an herb

tea. I chose a raspberry tea. We each had our own little tea pot filled with hot water.

Because tea treats are made and baked fresh for each service, a twenty four hour advance notice is required. When we arrived, our table was set with all the tea accompaniments including milk, lemon slices, sugars and fresh mint.

A tray of made-to-order tea sandwiches are followed by fresh baked mini scones with creme Anglaise and fruit preserves. Next, came an assortment

of beautiful sweets including chocolate covered strawberries and rich tea pastries. It’s OK to ask for a container to take home the extras.

The menu includes this story: “Afternoon Tea was first created when Anne, seventh duchess of Bedford, grew tired of the sinking feeling which afflicted her every afternoon around four o’clock during the long dull space between meals. In 1840, she plucked up the courage and asked for a tray of tea, bread, butter and cake to be brought to her room. Once she formed the habit, she found it impossible to break. Thus, the traditional Afternoon Tea was born and still remains a welcome respite in the afternoon!”
