Missouri's Great American Road Trip - burger, fries and a shake
Stephanie Jolly, Culinary Travel Examiner recently wrote about “Sonic drive-in and other top roadside burger joints worth visiting across the country.” The story helped me realize what an economical vacation the Great American Road Trip really is.
She writes about burger joints including Sonic drive ins. I don’t think it would be summer if I didn’t have at least one Sonic limeade. My other road trip drive-in favorite is Steak and Shake.
Two of the five Steak and Shakes in Springfield MO have the original signage and nostalgic decor. The old Route 66 location at St. Louis & National still offers curb service.
Road trippers just want identifiable food that has names we can pronounce without using a multilingual dictionary. Steak n Shake was founded in 1934 in Normal, Illinois. Gus Belt, the founder of Steak n Shake, insisted on cooked-to-order food. Your order is served on real china with glasses and flatware today just as it always was.
It’s a classic burger, fries and a Coke menu, updated with soups, salads and chicken. The franchise is also known for their thin and crispy fries and real-milk, hand-dipped milk shakes. Steak n Shakes are located along much of historic Route 66 on Illinois, Missouri and Oklahoma.
Springfield’s Nostalgic Steak n Shakes are located along the old Route 66: 1158 St. Louis Street, 417-866-6109, Faxasak 417-866-0273 and, 1550 S. Glenstone Ave., 417-887-0906, Faxasak 417-887-8686.
Dining along a Route 66 Road trip is easy on the pocketbook. Travelers are looking for simple food and inexpensive restaurants as we travel the Mother Road. We are not looking for the fine dining experience of Mobil 5 Star-Rated Restaurant. We want a clean location, decent food, and no sporks.
Steak n Shake currently operates over 475 restaurants in 22 different states. Faster drive-thru’s replaced carhops in the 70's. The STEAKBURGER™ sandwich is still made of ground steak and the shakes are always made with premium ice cream.
