Break free of the chain gang

If your goal is to make good time and just get from point A to point B,a restaurant chain may be the best food break for you. Or, if travelers need to see a familiar menu, then count on fast food chains for consistency. I always count on a good cup of coffee at the McDonald’s drive through almost anywhere I travel. The McDonald's Trip Planner will help you locate your next caffeine stop.

But why go on vacation just to stay where you always stay, shop where you always shop and eat where you have lunch every day? Bed and breakfasts provide that extra special touch to make a weekend getaway or a week of b& b hopping a truly memorable vacation experience. Considering all the personal touches and gourmet cuisine, b and b’s are very affordable accommodations. Here are five reasons to choose a B & B for some real R & R.

1. Concierge extraordinaire. If you are looking for a great little winery, the closest movie house, or tickets to the Repertory Theater, the innkeeper can set you up. The owners usually have recommendations for what to see and do in the area or know where to get a massage or a manicure. Count on the proprietor for an excellent dinner recommendation. Some of the best restaurant recommendations I ever received were from B & B innkeepers. The proprietors will even call ahead and make reservations for you.

2. Breakfast is always a special occasion at a B & B. Enjoy a home cooked breakfast and really good morning coffee in real cups instead of that weak stuff found in most in-room hotel coffee makers. Breakfast is a B & B’s specialty and they take pride in serving the best breakfast ever. Let them know in advance if you have any dietary restrictions and they will accommodate you.

3. You can always be comfortable and feel safe with B & Bs that are affiliated with an organization such as BedandBreakfast.com or Bed & Breakfast Inns Online. Innkeepers are hospitality professionals whose best advertising is a well fed and rested guest. They are counting on you telling others about the cleanliness and charm of the B & B.

4. Extra touches, like free softdrinks, or afternoon tea, bicycles, fresh baked evening treats like cookies or ice cream sundaes are available at no extra charge. Some have Jacuzzis or hot tubs, free movie libraries, and popcorn, books, magazines, VCRs or DVDs. Innkeepers have the special touches ready and waiting before you ever think about them. All offered at no extra charge. These little luxuries aren’t extra at a B & B.

5. It’s peaceful and quiet. There are usually beautiful views or great gardens, walking trails or perhaps an herb garden. You are a guest in the innkeepers beautifully furnished and landscaped home. You may just want to curl up with a good book or sip a glass of wine on the patio in the afternoon. Your comfort and relaxation is their goal.

Business travelers are increasingly looking to B & Bs for accommodations. After a long hard day, the comfort and coziness at a B & B are a refreshing physical and mental break. Savvy vacationers and business travelers know the best way to begin a busy day is with a comfortable nights sleep and a good breakfast.
